Indiana Driver Safety Program

A driver who accumulates 18 or more active points during a two year period will be notified and required to attend an administrative hearing. At the hearing, the presiding officer will make a determination whether to place the driver on probation or suspend the person's driving privileges for a period of not less than thirty days up to the maximum one year or impose additional requirements beyond the order of probation or suspension such as required attendance at a BMV approved driving improvement program.

After a ticket is issued for conviction of a traffic violation, he / she will receive a notification from the BMV to complete a BMV-approved Driver Safety Program (DSP), the eligible driver will have 90 days to complete the Indiana Defensive Driving Course and pass the examination.
  • Receive a 4 point credit to a driver’s record for successfully completion of Driver Safety Program (DSP)
  • This 4 point credit may only be applied once every three years.
